Fighter jets kill 10 militants in NW Pakistan

A local official says Pakistani fighter jets have destroyed several militant hide-outs in the northwest, killing 10 insurgents.

Samiullah Khan, a local administrator, says the strikes Saturday targeted remnants of the Pakistani Taliban in the Orakzai tribal region, where the army declared victory last week over the militants.

He says some militants were also wounded in the attacks.

Pakistan launched an operation in Orakzai in mid-March against militants who fled last year from an army offensive in the South Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The government says it has killed scores of militants in the operation, but the remoteness of the area makes it impossible to independently confirm its claims.
