Downtown Bangkok has been turned into a virtual war zone again as a rogue general supporting anti-government protesters was shot in the head while he was talking to a New York Times reporter. Maj. Gen. Khattiya Sawasdiphol was rushed to a hospital and is now in intensive care unit.
Clashes immediately ensued after Khattiya was shot, with Red Shirts protesters throwing rocks at police and military personnel, who fired back with live ammunition. One person was killed in the shooting, while seven others were injured.
New York Times reporter Thomas Fuller said he was asking Khattiya whether government forces could break into the Red Shirts’ barricade when a shot was fired. Fuller claimed that Khattiya’s last words before dropping were, “The military cannot get in here.”
Clashes have continued in Bangkok despite Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s proposal to dissolve Parliament and call for new elections later this year if protesters leave the capital. The Red Shirts have been occupying a section of Bangkok since March 12.
